HOP Leadership
Program 2010: May 24 - June 7
From May 24th - June 7, 2010, the inaugural team of
students and leaders successfully summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, and broke ground
on a new orphanage, Kilimanjaro
Kids Community.
During the week of the climb, students had the opportunity to foster close
relationships with their peers, leaders, and the local porters and guides,
while summiting one of the largest mountains in the world.
Throughout the climb, students learned basic Swahili, and traditional
Tanzanian songs and dances. Although physically demanding, pushing the
students to new limits, all agreed it was incredibly rewarding.
During the second week, students were able to work hand-in-hand
with members of the local community on the orphanage: Kili Kids Community. Tasks included constructing
the first building of the orphanage, building benches for the children,
planting and tending to trees on the border of the land, in hopes of creating
a natural fence, and clearing other parts of the land for further
construction. While having a positive impact on the local community, students
were also able to make life-long friends. Several of the students
who participated in 2010 are excited to return to Tanzania to continue
their involvement with HOP.
