For nearly 4 years, HOP has partnered with Dr. Charles and the Usa River Medical Clinic, an understaffed health facility serving more than 15,000 people. In 2008, after summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro, three groups of WWT trekkers brought dozens of duffel bags filled with emergency medical supplies such as splinting and bandaging supplies, suture kits and surgical materials, obstetrical emergency supplies, lidocaine and syringes, and infant ambu bags. This past year, HOP leveraged physicians trekking with WWT to more comprehensively assess clinical needs. In the last 3 years, HOP has provided support to the Kilimanjaro Children’s Orphanage in Moshi Tanzania.
What began as donations of health and hygiene supplies to this orphanage, has grown to a long-term commitment to help the more than 150 children living there. This past year, HOP purchased 2 Heifer cows, each of which produces 15 - 20 liters of milk daily. HOP volunteers, in collaboration with the older kids at the orphanage, retrieved and transported the cows, built a fenced-in stable, and established a fund to support monthly delivery of feed and staff to provide daily care for the cows.
After 3 years of strengthening community partnerships, HOP has formed a sister organization, HOP - Tanzania. Land was purchased with funding from HOP in early 2010, and during this year's student leadership program, ground was broken for a new orphanage - Kilimanjaro Kid's Community.
